Car-pooling schemes encourage car owners to cut congestion by inviting people who are making the same trip to share a vehicle. Typically, such schemes are led by workplaces and include Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and infrastructure solutions such as online booking schemes, ‘park and pool’ venues and reserved parking for car-poolers. Some car-pooling schemes may incorporate the use of hybrid, clean and electric vehicle fleets. Schemes may be integrated with public transport systems (e.g. park and ride) while infrastructure solutions such as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes may be implemented.
